Karangan basa sunda is a form of writing in the Sundanese language. This type of writing is still used in present-day Indonesia, and it can be traced back to ancient times.
Basa sunda has been around for centuries, and it's said that basa was already an established form of written language before European colonizers arrived on the Indonesian island chain. A lot of people believe this is because at one point in history the Sundanese empire stretched from western Java to Sumatra. It's possible that many peoples across these regions shared some historical relationships, which may have helped inspire each group to use its own spoken language as a means of communication and expression. Today basa sunda is used by Sundanese people, but it can still be seen in some other parts of Indonesia. For example, although most Sundanese people are fluent in the language they also use basa to communicate with ethnicities that live in other parts of the country. The primary difference between Sundanese and Javanese languages is that Javanese comes from northern parts of Indonesia where basa was once used more frequently than it is today. Several studies show that traditional Sundanese or Garo writing contains two distinct types of Garo characters: ones that are similar to the modern written form and ones which actually look different. Some scholars argue that basa sunda and garo handwriting represent two different braille scripts, both of which were probably developed beginning in the 17th century CE. Additionally, there is also a theory that basa sunda was inspired by the domba script which is still used across Indonesia for some forms of Sundanese literature. However, the domba script was not as widely used as basa sunda and it's possible that both scripts evolved separately. Still others hypothesize that basa sunda and domba handwriting may have come from a common source: Javanese or medieval Arabic writing. The writing system itself is also said to date back to ancient times. A group of scholars called the "traditional" or "ancient" Sundanese think that basa sunda was discovered in the 13th century CE. This group believes that it contains some elements of ancient Javanese writing, but it has evolved over time. Furthermore, this group also believes that Javanese words were borrowed into Sundanese at some point in history. There are other groups that believe that Sundanese basa was substantially influenced by Javanese language and literature. The other groups that question this theory include the "mixed", "late" and "modern Sundanese". The mixed Sundanese think that basa sunda has been around since ancient times until today, while also having some influence from Javanese. Meanwhile the late and modern Sundanese think that basa sunda was actually developed much later, in the period when kingdoms fell and when Indonesia was colonized. Basa Sunda is written vertically from left to right, just like standard English. The letters are punctuated with a period or a full stop symbol which is marked at the bottom right side of each sentence.
